Das schöne Auge des Betrachters

Is knowing the sequence of traffic light changes at a large intersection enough for you to feel at home? Do you wonderif mythical figures provide examples of experiences such as joy and solitude? Have you ever tried to write down memories of precious moments shared with the people you love? Das schöne Auge des Betrachters (The Beautiful Eye of the Beholder) explores some of these questions and tries to answer them with poetry.

The Author

Christophe Fricker’s poetry reflects his interests in language, friendship and travel. He has spent extended periods of time in Freiburg, Berlin, Singapore, Halifax, Oxford and other places within the past decade; in 2006 he arrived at Duke University to take up a position as Post-doctoral Lecturing Fellow with the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature. Das schöne Auge des Betrachters is his first book of poetry. A collection of travelogues is due to appear in 2009. Fricker is also an avid translator of contemporary American poetry into German.

  • ‘Das schöne Auge des Betrachters’, along with two other books published by Johannes Frank, was launched at a series of readings in Germany in June 2008 (Heidelberg [Galerie Melnikow], Berlin [Zebrano-Theater], Tübingen and Würzburg).

  • In January 2009, a dedicated exhibition was put up at Duke University exploring poetry and illustrations from the book. The exhibit focussed on ideas relating to language translation (from German to English) as well as from language into visual imagery. Link to the exhibition flyer
