Although there have been remarkable developments in modern graphical software technology, I still find the immediacy of pen and ink very compelling. Subtle changes in tone and definition, that when applied cannot be undone, can alter both the mood of an illustration and the direction in which it develops. With a limited capacity to change even the tiniest stroke, you are often forced by your own actions to amend your approach. Of course, you could begin all over again? Thus, you are in direct control, but at the same time powerless to your own judgement. As an individual and spontaneous act, it can be strangely humbling.
